So I learned today that a New Jersey woman has successfully sued her parents for college tuition.
That’s right, an adult, over the age of 18, is now the recipient of $16,000 a year in college tuition because the state of New Jersey has a law on the books that allows for this kind of extortion.

“New Jersey courts generally view college education as a necessity. The recent trend in New Jersey has been to require parents to pay the college costs for their children.”
I couldn’t make this up if I tried.
And apparently, New Jersey isn’t the only state that’s decided the courts have the power to order divorced parents to pay college expenses. Other states include:
- Connecticut
- Hawaii
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Iowa
- Massachusetts
- Missouri
- New York
- Oregon
- Utah
- Washington
Responsibility is a funny thing
I don’t get it.
Once you’re an adult, you’re responsible for yourself. It’s pretty simple, really.
Although it’s awfully generous of some parents to help their kids pay for college, it’s not a legal mandate. Or at least it shouldn’t be.
But I suppose that’s the way it is these days. No one wants to take responsibility for their own actions. And as always, the government is there to violently force citizens to abide by rules that, at least in this case, are designed to further coddle a nation of entitled underachievers who truly believe they are deserving of special privileges.
I do hope the parents of this kid are somehow able to get this decision overturned.
The way I see it, this girl looks like she hasn’t wanted for much in the way of food or clothing. She made it to 18 in one piece, looks healthy, and seems to be capable enough of getting a lawyer to sue her parents. Certainly she should be capable enough of paying for her own college tuition without resorting to extortion while using the government as her personal enforcer.
